How to open a Portuguese bank account
What banks ask for, what you can do from abroad, and why a Portuguese account matters for your visa file.
The short answer
You can normally open a Portuguese bank account with your passport, NIF, proof of address and evidence of income, either in a branch or remotely with banks that support non-resident onboarding. Consulates expect to see a Portuguese account holding your funds.
Needed
Passport, NIF, proof of address, income evidence
Remote opening
Possible with some institutions
Why it matters
Visa file, rent, utilities, direct debits
After arrival
Update address and residence status
Why the consulate cares
A Portuguese account signals that the move is real and gives the consulate a place to see your declared funds sitting in the jurisdiction you say you are moving to. It is also required in practice for rent, utilities and direct debits.
What banks ask for
- Passport or national ID.
- NIF.
- Proof of address (your current one is fine before you move).
- Proof of income or employment.
- Sometimes a tax residency declaration.
Non-resident onboarding varies significantly between institutions: some open accounts remotely with a video call, others require a branch visit or a representative with power of attorney.
Traditional bank or fintech?
A digital bank is convenient, but for the visa file a Portuguese IBAN from an established institution is the safer choice. Many people keep both: a Portuguese account for local life and a fintech account for currency transfers.
Moving money
Compare the total cost of transfers rather than the headline exchange rate, and expect banks to ask about the origin of larger amounts. Keep documentation of where the money came from — property sale, pension lump sum, savings — because you will be asked.
After you arrive
Update your address and residence status with the bank once you have your permit. Accounts opened as non-resident sometimes carry different fees.
Questions people actually ask
- Do I need to visit Portugal to open an account?
- Not always. Some banks onboard non-residents remotely; others require a branch visit or a representative.
- How much should I deposit?
- Enough to demonstrate the means your route requires, with documentation of where the money came from.
