How to get a NIF in Portugal

Why it comes first

Nothing works without a NIF. Bank account, rental contract, utilities, phone contract, buying a car, paying for anything with an invoice in your name — all of it depends on this number. Get it before you do anything else.

The routes to getting one

In person at a tax office (Finanças). If you are already in Portugal, this is the cheapest route. Bring your passport and proof of address in your home country. Availability of walk-in service varies by office.

Through a fiscal representative. If you are outside Portugal and not resident in the EU, the tax authority generally requires a fiscal representative — a Portuguese-resident person or firm who receives correspondence on your behalf. Several services provide this for an annual fee, and this is how most people get a NIF before moving.

Through a lawyer with power of attorney. More expensive, but sometimes bundled with the rest of a relocation file.

After you arrive

Once you have a residence permit and a Portuguese address, update your address with the tax authority and, where applicable, end the fiscal representation. Keeping an outdated address on file is how people miss official letters that matter.

What to watch for

Keep the exact spelling of your name consistent across your NIF, passport, bank and lease — mismatches cause avoidable rejections later. Store the NIF document itself; you will be asked for the number constantly and for the document occasionally.
