Valid passport

Travel document your visa is issued into. Must stay valid well beyond the visa period.

Two blank pages and validity of at least three months beyond the intended stay.

National visa application form

The residence visa application itself, submitted at the consulate or VFS centre.

Always download the current form from the consulate handling your country; wording changes.

Two passport photographs

Identification photos attached to the application.

Recent, plain light background, 35x45 mm.

Criminal record certificate

Proof of no relevant convictions, from every country you lived in for over a year.

The single most common cause of refusal: issued too early. Request it close to the appointment.

Consent for Portuguese criminal record check

Authorises AIMA to request your Portuguese criminal record.

Signed form handed in with the application.

Travel medical insurance

Cover for medical care and repatriation for the visa period.

Must state repatriation cover and a minimum of 30,000 EUR.

Proof of accommodation in Portugal

Where you will live on arrival: lease, property deed or a signed hosting declaration.

A twelve-month lease is the strongest form; short bookings are often rejected.

Proof of regular income

Bank statements, pension statements, dividend or rental records covering the last six to twelve months.

Statements should show the income arriving, not just a balance.

Pension or passive income statement

Confirms the recurring income a D7 application relies on.

Combine the provider statement with your own summary letter.

Employer or client contract letter

Confirms remote work, salary and permission to work from Portugal.

Freelancers use contracts plus invoices for the same purpose.

Cover letter / statement of purpose

Your own explanation of why you are moving, how you support yourself and what you will do.

Not always listed, always read. It frames every other document.

Portuguese tax number (NIF)

Needed for a lease, a bank account, utilities and almost everything else.

Non-residents usually need a fiscal representative until they hold residency.

Portuguese bank account

Where income lands and standing orders are paid from.

Bring passport, NIF, proof of address and proof of income.

Social security number (NISS)

Required to work, register a business or access contributory benefits.

Requested after arrival, with your residence documents.

Health service registration (SNS)

Registers you at a local health centre and gives you a user number.

Take your residence proof and NISS to the centro de saude for your address.

Proof of address in Portugal

Lease, utility bill or a junta de freguesia certificate for your residence appointment.

Register the lease with the tax authority so it counts as proof.

AIMA residence permit appointment

Converts the entry visa into a residence permit.

Bring originals and copies of everything the consulate already saw.

Residence permit card

Your legal status in Portugal; renewal dates start from its issue date.

Track the expiry: renewals open before it lapses, not after.

Change of tax residence

Notifies the tax authority that you now live in Portugal.

Do this before applying for any special tax status.
