Housing is the whole story

The gap between Portuguese wages and Portuguese city rents is the single most important fact about the cost of living here. Groceries, transport, healthcare and eating out are genuinely affordable. Rent in Lisbon, and increasingly in Porto, is not — and the gap between the capital and inland cities like Braga or Coimbra is large enough to change which visa threshold feels comfortable.

What a month looks like

Our calculator builds a monthly figure from dated, itemised inputs — rent, utilities, internet, groceries, transport, insurance and leisure — for each city and household size, rather than quoting a single national average that fits nobody. Adjust the items you know differ for you: a car in the Algarve, an international school in Lisbon, a bigger apartment for a family.

Lisbon vs Porto in one paragraph

Lisbon has the deepest job market, the largest international community, the most international schools and the highest rents. Porto offers a real urban economy, a compact walkable centre and noticeably lower housing costs, with a smaller English-speaking job market. For remote workers with foreign income, Porto is usually the better arithmetic; for people who need a Portuguese career, Lisbon usually wins.
