Two profiles, one route
The D2 covers the entrepreneur incorporating a Portuguese company and the independent professional with a service contract from a Portuguese client. Both are judged on whether the activity is real, viable and relevant to Portugal.
What a credible file looks like
- Company registration in Portugal, or a documented declaration of intent to incorporate.
- A business plan with specific, sourced numbers: market, pricing, costs, hiring, and a realistic path to revenue.
- Evidence of funds to launch and sustain the activity, separate from your personal living costs.
- Qualifications or professional registration where the activity is regulated.
- The standard set: NIF, Portuguese bank account, accommodation, insurance, criminal record certificate.
What weakens a file
Generic plans that could apply to any country; revenue projections with no basis; a company registered with no operational substance; and funds that appear days before submission with no traceable origin.
Independent service providers
If your work is for Portuguese clients rather than your own company, a signed service contract or proposal from that client does a lot of the work. This is the line between the D2 and the D8: Portuguese clients point to the D2, foreign clients point to the D8.
After approval
You enter on the visa, attend the residence permit appointment, and then run the business under Portuguese tax and social security rules. Budget for an accountant from month one — Portuguese self-employment and corporate filing obligations are not something to improvise.
